The “Rusca” prison is the only women’s prison in Moldova, detaining about 300 inmates. The Salvation Army in Moldova has been working with the prison since it opened over seven years ago. Its works consists of offering personal contact with individual inmates, the delivery of humanitarian aid, and the organization of practical and academic IT-courses to acquire skills and knowledge for life after release or further employment. Additional educational groups and courses provide inmates with information on HIV (infection and prevention), seminars on healthy living, and general counseling. Bible studies with a hot meal takes place every Friday.
The prison’s administration provides the facilities for The Salvation Army in Moldova to conduct IT-classes. This project was developed in conjunction with the prison administration, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Justice, The Salvation Army’s Project Coordinator and the teacher of the IT-course. The program’s content has changed a few times over the course of the last 7 years, in order to reflect the needs of the “Rusca” inmates.
